Sundance Premiere: Atomic States of America

Based on Kelly McMasters’s memoir about growing up in a nuclear-reactor community, this stirring film illustrates the dire health consequences for many residents in Shirley, her Long Island hometown. Yet despite the known risks of utilizing nuclear power, our country’s rapidly increasing energy needs are fueling a nuclear renaissance. This documentary takes the viewer on a journey to reactor communities around the country, and exposes the truths and myths of nuclear power, and poses the question of whether or not man can responsibly split the atom.

Dirty Energy

On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded off the Gulf of Mexico taking the lives of 11 workers and sank as millions of barrels of oil poured into the ocean creating one of the worst environmental disasters in history. Dirty Energy tells the personal story of those directly affected by the spill who now struggle to rebuild their lives amidst the economic devastation and long-term health risks. A story too often glossed over by the mainstream media and ignored by those sent to Washington to represent the will of the people, not the corporations.

Pipe Dreams

Coming on the heels of the massive protest in DC — where over 12,000 protesters encircled the White House — the film explores the threat posed by the Keystone XL pipeline as well as the sustainable alternatives to dirty tar sands oil. It has become the most controversial environmental battle in the U.S. today.

Across the heartland of America, farmers and landowners are fighting to protect their land, their water, and their livelihood. Routed over 1,700 miles from the tar sands of Alberta to the refineries of the Texas Gulf Coast, this pipeline is set to cross the country’s largest freshwater resource, the Ogallala Aquifer, and the fragile Sandhills of Nebraska. A spill along the Keystone XL pipeline’s proposed route could threaten
