Finding a 'FRESH' Way to Look at Life

While filming her documentary on sustainable food systems, Ana Sofia Joanes changes her outlook on life. In July 2006, I was at Joel Salatin's Polyface Farm in Swoope, Va., shooting "FRESH," my documentary about sustainable food systems. One morning, I decided to get my hands dirty and join the farm's interns in some chores. I was lugging large water buckets up a hill, bringing water to the chickens. It was sweltering. In excitement, the chickens were stepping on each other to reach the water first. A wave of satisfaction rose in my chest; these chickens need me!

The Power of Song

Folk musician and controversial activist Pete Seeger went from Harvard to the top of the music charts to the McCarthy black list to protesting for civil rights, disarmament, and currently, at age 91, the environment. Filmmaker Jim brown deftly crafts his biopic from archival footage of Seeger’s performances (“Turn, Turn, Turn,” “If I Had a Hammer”),

James Cameron on Movies and Ecology

“Why do you care so much about ecological issues?” Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, asked James Cameron at a private event in Silicon Valley. “What is your responsibility and why are you using your significant perch?” “Any movie can be a teaching moment, but it has to be wrapped in powerful entertainment,” Cameron stated in response. He says part of the reason Avatar succeeded was that it spoke to the human psyche and heart.

A Bass and a Machete? Christopher Roberts

One evening when I was a child my parents let my sister and I stay up well past bedtime with bowls of popcorn to watch a documentary aired on TV: The Sky Above, the Mud Below. The film, which had won an Oscar for best documentary in 1962, followed six Europeans as they hiked straight across the mountainous interior of New Guinea, 450 miles of unmapped territory obscured by clouds.

Paul Watson: Raising Awareness or Just Hell?

“Imagine walking up to the Black Stone of Mecca and spitting on it. You’d be torn to pieces, and everyone would say you deserved it. Walk into the Vatican with a hammer and start smashing a few statues; see how far you’d get. But each and every day people go into the most beautiful, the most profoundly sacred cathedrals of this planet—the rainforests of Amazonia and Indonesia, the redwood forests of California—and totally desecrate and destroy those cathedrals with bulldozers and chainsaws.

Good and Naughty

I’ve never walked out of a movie feeling as happy as when I saw Amélie in 2001. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessan) had shown me a color-saturated, hyped-up Paris—the way his poetic protagonist Amélie (Audrey Tatou) would have experienced it—and the Parisians were even better-looking and sassier than I had hoped. More importantly, Jeunet’s writing was delicate and dark. As a little girl, Amélie imagines rabbits in the clouds, slips her hand deep into barrels of dried beans for the feel of it, and in a fit of naughtiness, punishes a neighbor who berates her by disconnecting his antenna at key…

Who’s Right?

In the film I Am Because We Are, Madonna reflects on cultural traditions and antiquated laws fueling Malawi’s epidemic number of AIDS patients and orphans:“On the one hand you could come to Malawi and say, ‘wow,’ these people are so caught up in these traditions that are thousands of years old. If only they could understand what I understand, and then they could fix everything. But on the other hand, there are so many things I’d never want to change. The people who live here are amazing. In spite of all the hardships and devastation, they have a sense of…
